A little music…

Posted in Music We Like on June 23rd, 2010 by Matty

So, things have been cranking @ MT Music thanks to the recent release of La Dolce Notte (and if you haven’t got your copy, what are you waiting for?).

For those who may not know…it’s not easy putting out a double disc set!  So many things involved and the time spent…sheesh, it’s about as grueling as the Mahut-Isner Wimbledon match that went down on Wednesday (and continues on Thursday).

So let’s get some content and music going again.

Oh, name’s Matty by the way.  Been sitting behind the scenes on this blog tweaking some spots, but decided to make a few posts now as well.  Been around this crazy scene far too long, but don’t want to leave.

Oh, I have music…well it’s a podcast.  Not just me, but others worldwide.  Head on over to MCast sometime and check it out.

But, while that’s some music, I’m sharing here what I’m digging right now.  Just picked up this beaut and been chugging it pretty hard.

Dessous has quietly been one of my favorite deep house labels over the years.  Always solid,, always there, always reliable.  Label head Steve Bug (also of Poker Flat) doesn’t disappoint as it’s time to pull a few more secrets out of the bag (volume 1 was released in 2007).  Double disc set; disc 1 with some of the tracks, disc 2 with Bug’s “Secret” mix.

Time Out New York wrote a fantastic review of this.  Go check it out.

But what good is it without some track samples?

thank you turntables on the hudson!!

I came across this video last night and it made me feel excited and inspired for the present and future because of something that began in the past. i only hope to be a part of something now, that will be looked upon in the past that will give way to inspiration for the future.

i wanted to give a shout out to the guys from “turntables on the hudson”. for me, being able to hear good music, with good people and a good vibe, especially outside under the stars, is what helps me understand our human connection to the world around us and the world inside us.

it is so important to let loose and have fun. to enjoy life. to be easy and happy. this is living, feeling, believing.

when we feel good we vibrate this goodness which helps attract more good. i want to be part of this machine.

thank you music.

there is always an end and there is always a beginning, and there is all the time in between.

and this cycle goes on repeating itself through our own individual interpretation of what gives us  our definition of “end” and of  “beginning.”

this  becomes our personal journey and what actually defines our meanings of this lay deep inside ourselves.  as outsiders we can try and understand, we can try and relate our own understanding of this circle to others, when in reality it is ours and ours alone.

when we love someone we try and empathize and have compassion.  we try and offer our energy to help them with their end and their beginning.  whether their moment is  positive or  negative, we attempt to give something to the overall purpose of the ones we love.

what really is life.  why do we harp on so many insignificant details and are not available for the most significant.

why do we run out of time, cannot make a phone call, take time to visit, judge, worry about other people’s decisions and choices?  why do we not only worry about ourselves and how to be the best person we can be under all circumstances?

why is there not emphasis on caring and accepting?  why do people care who we love, what we do and how we do it?

we live in a world where the quick fix is the solution and the devastating end is the reality.  where we condition ourselves to accept tragedy with no time to deal and breathe.

i find so much beauty in my everyday activities.  but i do  have to actually be aware of slowing down and giving a moment to be thankful, otherwise i get wisked away with my deadlines and obligations.

time seems like it gets blamed for so much.  there is never enough time in the day, we always want one more day, where did the time go, if we only had more time.

we need to make time work in our favor.  that is what it is here for.  there is nothing but time and it is our job to keep ourselves aware of this and the people around us.

i write this with many different emotions and thoughts.  i have neglected writing because, well, i had no time.  hence the theme.  it is a constant as far as reminding myself to make the time.

we have so many awesome things happening for mother tongue music and we are so excited to begin sharing them with you.

we have been asked by theatremama to DJ cirque du soleil’s 25th anniversary party in nyc this month.  cirque is attempting to break the world record for number of stilt walkers up at the same time.  should be quite the event.  we will share photos and let you know how it goes!!!

i leave you today with the beautiful sounds of alkemx and his track, “time to lounge” off the magma album.

Alkemx, also known as Piero de Asmundis, started his career as a pianist and composer in Italy, working with the “South Pole Ballet”. Over the years he has worked with many prominent Italian Jazz artists. As time went by he began taking a stronger interest in sampling and sequencers and Alkemx was born.

dj.tigersprout presents…

Posted in Music We Like on May 5th, 2009 by b.

face-in-a-corner_fb

May 5th, 2009

moving to new york has been everything i had hoped it would be. this city encompasses what has to be one of the most vibrant and stimulating energies of any city on earth. of course it may not be the most natural vibe, but regardless of where it falls on the spectrum between completely natural and completely synthetic, the energy here is positively inspiring and extremely addictive.

back in 2000 when i first relocated here from san francisco, i was caught up in the search for the perfect beat — working days at a few of the top distributors in NYC pushing vinyl & CDs (the best in house, tech-hosue, electronica, leftfield & downtempo) and djing on the side. my life was very different back then, and there were only a few nights where i wasn’t out at clubs and lounges all night long!! this time around is much different. i am quite a bit older, and looking for more steady work, a much higher benefits package, and a job that i can possibly work from home. my work interests now lie in the field of travel photography and i have moved here to pursue it. of course, the music is still as much an integral part of my life as before, keeping me sane, keeping me thinking and keeping me in touch with my kind of reality. almost unbelievingly, i probably buy even more music now then i did way back then!! of course making more money really helps! thankfully, my eclectic addiction for the best in amazing soundscapes is just as fierce now as it ever was.
nearly 6 weeks back in NYC, i have revisited most of the places i used to frequent: bars, clubs, museums, restaurants, parks, famous landmarks… and i am filled with the same immense admiration for this city as i had, nearly a decade ago. surely nothing stays the same in big, ever churning cities such as this, but i was pleasantly surprised at how much was almost exactly the same — or too slightly different to notice. the streets still pulse with an intoxicating energy, and i find myself so amped that i don’t need coffee or tea and it’s easy for me to stay up til the wee hours of the morning. the dreamy hours just after midnight are my favorite — a period where most of the bulk of my creative work or brainstorming is accomplished. free from daylight distractions, the massive city falls into a background abstraction and i can slip into a quiet, thoughtful zone of reflection. accompanied by the best in electronic mood music, i float off into my own inner worlds of discovery and do the heavy lifting of what will eventual become the finished images posted on my blog.
here’s a look at 2 shots from a travel series i have recently been working on. both of these shots i took last december in southern iceland:
1. columnar basalt on the black sand beaches of vik, southern iceland
basalt-columns-in-mid-day-light
2. a golden reverie taken at jokulsarlon, iceland’s premier glacier lagoon
golden-reverie-jokulsarlon
…and here’s a look at a few gems currently in top rotation on my imac and in my shuffle:
smith & mudd — blue river: strummed acoustic guitar interwoven with crystalline electronica — beautiful, somewhat balearic, spiritually indulgent, classically arranged melody driven memories… a fusion of instrumental folk, country, starry disco & downtempo, these bright and intoxicating harmonies will have you lost in your thoughts, remembering youth, love and all things beautiful. max essa — continental drift: psychedelic disco at a lovely molasses pace, laced with rock / dance guitar rifts and a surprising 80’s sensuality. a perfect listen before or after clubbing or just for around the house — don’t forget to bring out the sunglasses and lazer beams!! (2009)
Max Essa – Back To The Beach – Bear Funk Music

fenomenon — pacific memories — the early tapes: smooth and atmospheric jazz, funk & folk dipped into a neon coating of electronic grooves, light latin rhythms and story-time adventure themes. these wonderful, warm, instrumental and vocal reveries will have you soon believing in magic, stopping to smell the flowers and smiling for no reason at your crazy neighbors. go ahead — indulge yourself, and sing!! (2006)
Fenomenon – Out Of Control – Beatservice

watching the sun rise…..

the_last_resort_cover

i am sitting here at work with my friend/co-worker/DJ, josh adams.  we spend our wednesday mornings and afternoons chillin at work, chatting about music and why we love to live our lives around it and in it.

we work in a restaurant called bottega cucina, a small ten table, italian restaurant located in west springfield, ma.

we listen to soul town on xm radio most of the day, but when we have the opportunity to switch the channel we go directly to area on xm.  this is where we find our common ground and we day dream of the future and we reminisce about the past.

we continue our day discussing tracks and experiences.  we motivate one another to stay focused and keep on keepin on.

when i asked josh today what was one of his favorite downtempo tracks he replied with out hesitation, “trentmoller, moan.”  he went on to explain that it reminds him of those special nights that lead into the next day.  the ones where the perfect sunrise happens and he is in the perfect place to watch.

i have had this tune on the back burner, waiting to share it.  once i heard josh say it….well, seems like the best time is now.

trentmoller is most definitely a genius when it comes to remixes and composing tracks.  his debut album “last resort” is one for the top albums ever category. (it is one of my top ten)

anders trentemoller is from copenhagen, denmark.  his track “moan” features the vocals of ane trolle and was released on “last resort”, october 9, 2006.

Second Sky

Posted in Music We Like on March 11th, 2009 by admin

The following has been my experience lately. As this first CD release gets closer to the finish, I must say I have moments of doubt and uncertainty.  And that is just what I have to leave them as, moments of doubt and uncertainty.  Nothing more.  I have been noticing that they have been increasing as I get closer to the finish line.  I have come to accept that it is quite normal and that it is just going to be a part of the process.  I have been letting these thoughts run through me and just moving forward.  I think the mental part of releasing art holds many back.  Seems like the ones who do it just think a lot less and do a lot more.

It is a rainy, cloudy, march morning and I have to admit there is something about weather like this I really like.  Maybe its because I am looking at it from my bedroom window and I am not outside :) .. I have a cool view from my bedroom of the old mill town that I live in. I took 10 minutes when I first woke up to sit back and enjoy the view of the canal, the old mill town, and the cars going by. It really put me in a good head space.

Well I am really hoping to have this project finished by Monday. I only have two shows this week so I have a lot more time to work on it.  Here is a tune that I have been enjoying lately, it actually sounds like my view from my bedroom window this morning.  When I first heard it and the drums began, I thought I was about to hear a recent cover or interpolation of Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues.” This spazzed me for a second as I have been working on a cover of that most recently.  Anyway choice tune here Second Sky, great sound and really feeling the vocals. I look forward to hearing more from you.
