About Mother Tongue Music

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13th, 2010 by b.

Here is our updated “About Mother Tongue Music” page:

Mother Tongue Music is an independent record label dedicated to exploring foreign lands for some of the finest sounds from around the world and bringing them to you.  Mother Tongue Music was established in 1999, by John LoBello (DJ Hush/Hush Collective).  John co-owned a underground vinyl record store, The Growroom. Which was  located in Amhert, Ma.  Through the change digital downloading brought, The Growroom closed its doors in 2004.  The music business shifted, but John’s  passion did not.  John began his dedicated quest to bring the world’s great undiscovered music to the people. In 2005, Bethany Daley joined the team and Mother Tongue Music began with a new, strong vision. This blog is an easily accessible portal to share that music with you. Here is a quick guide to the content on this site.

On this site’s home page you can find John and Bethay’s blog, as well as some great blogs from our friends.  Also you will find that our blogs are loaded with great tunes from some of the best producers and musicians in the world.  As we continue on this journey we find amazing, inspirational bits we like to call “Good News.” (please take the time to watch and share). Then you will find our “Music Lounge” and “Podcast”, which hosts an array of superb DJ mixes and choice playlists providing you with hours of listening pleasure.

Lastly, visit our online “Shop” for our new and old releases.  Music featuring,  downtempo, chill, world, dub, reggae and house.  So please, tune in! We know you will find many great discoveries on this site. Enjoy.

*******************************************************************

Today I decided to update the site and found myself excited to also share a post,  it has been awhile. With the release of La Dolce Notte almost behind us and our next series on the horizon, I seem to be distracted from sharing my thoughts and some tunes I am listening to currently. So today I decided to take the time.

Both John and I believe so much in what we are doing with Mother Tongue Music.  As we continue on the journey of making an independent label a success, we meet challenge after challenge.  We are learning as we go and we dedicate every last bit of the days energy to the process.

The idea of something is easy, but the commitment is can be tough at times.  Things do not always work out, mistakes are made, our personal lives need our attention, our health and balance shifts. But then the days of good news come and we are filled with inspiration passion and desire.

In a world where mainstreams dominates, bringing new music to people is quite fulfilling.  My mother is a great example.  Since we began La Dolce Notte, she has been our experiment.  She is someone who might have been intimidated by the different styles, but due to the fact that she is my mom, she was willing to give it a chance.  She is now one of our biggest advocates, sharing with her friends and co-workers the music we provide.  What I notice is an excitement in the newness and a new perspective to music.  This IS why i do what i do.  Music IS the universal language and it brings people together.  Whether it be to dance, to lounge, to feel, etc.

Here is our updated “ABOUT” page and a tune by Wax Tailor. “This Train” featuring Voice and Ali Harter. ( Wax Tailor can be found on our La Dolce Notte release)

Wax Tailor is the alias of French trip hop/hip hop producer, Jean-Christoph Le Saout.

After being a host on a French radio in the Paris suburb of Mantes-La-Jolie, JC Le Saout started the French Rap band La Formule in the 1990s. He created his label Lab’Oratoire in 1998 and produced records from La Formule as well as Break Beat compilations and a collaboration with the Swedish band Looptroop.  He began work on the Wax Tailor project in 2001

A little music…

Posted in Music We Like on June 23rd, 2010 by Matty

So, things have been cranking @ MT Music thanks to the recent release of La Dolce Notte (and if you haven’t got your copy, what are you waiting for?).

For those who may not know…it’s not easy putting out a double disc set!  So many things involved and the time spent…sheesh, it’s about as grueling as the Mahut-Isner Wimbledon match that went down on Wednesday (and continues on Thursday).

So let’s get some content and music going again.

Oh, name’s Matty by the way.  Been sitting behind the scenes on this blog tweaking some spots, but decided to make a few posts now as well.  Been around this crazy scene far too long, but don’t want to leave.

Oh, I have music…well it’s a podcast.  Not just me, but others worldwide.  Head on over to MCast sometime and check it out.

But, while that’s some music, I’m sharing here what I’m digging right now.  Just picked up this beaut and been chugging it pretty hard.

Dessous has quietly been one of my favorite deep house labels over the years.  Always solid,, always there, always reliable.  Label head Steve Bug (also of Poker Flat) doesn’t disappoint as it’s time to pull a few more secrets out of the bag (volume 1 was released in 2007).  Double disc set; disc 1 with some of the tracks, disc 2 with Bug’s “Secret” mix.

Time Out New York wrote a fantastic review of this.  Go check it out.

But what good is it without some track samples?

Mother Tongue Music serves up a strong tonic of intrigue and adventure on their latest La Dolce Notte release. With superior programming, mixing, and a cognisant track selection, Hush Collective takes you on a James Bond-esque jetsetting ride of international romance, obsession, and cloak and dagger operations. Dubstep styled vocal sleeper “Under The Dancing Feet” by Clouds kicks things off on the first disc and the mission begins. From Latin grooves, Middle Eastern vibes, to surf style beats, this mix will have you galavanting around the world in formidable fashion. Featured here are first-class tracks by Balkan Beat Box, Mo’ Horizons, Woolfy vs Projections, and Waldeck. The second disc is a spellbinding downtempo mix, filled with enchanting strings, seductive drums and ethereal melodies. Captivating music from Yonderboi and Boris Kovac injects passion into the mix, and the ever so sultry Nightmares On Wax remix of Alphawezen’s “Gun Song”, will put you right in the middle of a femme fatale film. All the pressure is finally released as the story ends with the gorgeous “Lluvia” by Federico Aubele, a song that really does encompass the beauty of the entire piece. With a tracklist spanning fifteen years of quality music and a palette of indulgent sounds, La Dolce Notte is a double disc mix that will fill all your senses. So put on your favorite fedora and pour yourself a vodka martini, it’s time to sink deep into the sweet night.

We hope everyone feels inspired and fired up for 2010 like we do!!

Lots of things happening here at Mother Tongue Music.

First we would like to thank everyone who has been a part of our 2009 and the success it brought. The good energy and love we have received is working! In a few weeks we will share with you our first major compilation brought to you by Mother Tongue Music, mixed by Hush Collective.  We are quite excited to say the least!!!!!

This double disc will take you on a journey around the world and where ever your imagination wants to take you.  We are very proud of this compilation. We have had the amazing opportunity to work with some of the world’s most talented musicians, producers and labels, as well as working with the brilliance of graphic designer, John Dill of NYC.

Over the next few months and year, we will be working on developing our website, sharing podcasts and creating more compilations that satisfy listeners from beginning to end.

There is always a story to tell and a story to hear, we hope that as we begin telling our story, you hear it, believe in it and become part of it.

Cheers to the New Year and the budding potential it posesses.

hush collective spins for 3,000,000 plus @ pride NYC with I amsterdam!

Posted in Events on September 11th, 2009 by b.

nycpride2

Mother Tongue had the great opportunity to DJ a float with ‘I amsterdam’ for the 2009 New York City Pride Parade.

349614308

‘I amsterdam’ is the motto for the Amsterdam area. It is the city’s marketing initiative as a means for Amsterdam to profile itself assertively on the international arena.

The Deputy Mayor of Amsterdam, Carolien Gehrels, who is married to a woman, was among a delegation of officials from the Netherlands. They were all attending the NYC Pride Celebration to embrace efforts to legalize same-sex marriage in New York State.

The theme was Marriage Equality. The float had a huge wedding cake displayed, as well as over 50 people from Amsterdam and the U.S. dancing and cheering as it traveled down 5th Avenue to Greenich Village. The music for the float was provided by Mother Tongue’s John LoBello.

thank you turntables on the hudson!!

Posted in Good News, Music We Like on August 12th, 2009 by b.

I came across this video last night and it made me feel excited and inspired for the present and future because of something that began in the past. i only hope to be a part of something now, that will be looked upon in the past that will give way to inspiration for the future.

i wanted to give a shout out to the guys from “turntables on the hudson”. for me, being able to hear good music, with good people and a good vibe, especially outside under the stars, is what helps me understand our human connection to the world around us and the world inside us.

it is so important to let loose and have fun. to enjoy life. to be easy and happy. this is living, feeling, believing.

when we feel good we vibrate this goodness which helps attract more good. i want to be part of this machine.

thank you music.

hush collective spins cirque du soleil’s 25th anniversary party!!

Posted in Events on July 13th, 2009 by b.

cirque25

on june 16, 2009, mother tongue music had the opportunity to be a part of cirque du soleil’s 25th anniversary party in new york city.

hush collective played for hundreds of new yorkers and tourists while cirque tried to break the world record for how many people they could get up on stilts at one time.

the event was held on pier 84, the circle line pier of off the west side highway.

the day was perfect not too much sun to make it unbearably hot and no rain.

in june of 2004 cirque du soleil set the first guinness world record for stilt-walking with 544 employees from its international headquarters in montreal.  in 2006, a group of japanese people beat cirque’s record with 614 stilt-walkers and, in 2008, 625 young people from brandford, ontario (canada) took the title from the japanese.

five years after the first guiness world record for the most people simultaneously walking on stilts, cirque du soleil invited its artists, employees and fans of fortaleza (brazil), las vegas (u.s.a.), lisbon (portugal), macau (china), montreal (canada), nagoya (japan), new york (u.s.a.), orlando (u.s.a.) and tokyo (japan), as well as the population of moscow (russia), to gather on june 16th, 2009 and help reclaim the title.

5027805047028_300_f1c64e02f5ae0200408318d832d0faa8

there is always an end and there is always a beginning, and there is all the time in between.

and this cycle goes on repeating itself through our own individual interpretation of what gives us  our definition of “end” and of  “beginning.”

this  becomes our personal journey and what actually defines our meanings of this lay deep inside ourselves.  as outsiders we can try and understand, we can try and relate our own understanding of this circle to others, when in reality it is ours and ours alone.

when we love someone we try and empathize and have compassion.  we try and offer our energy to help them with their end and their beginning.  whether their moment is  positive or  negative, we attempt to give something to the overall purpose of the ones we love.

what really is life.  why do we harp on so many insignificant details and are not available for the most significant.

why do we run out of time, cannot make a phone call, take time to visit, judge, worry about other people’s decisions and choices?  why do we not only worry about ourselves and how to be the best person we can be under all circumstances?

why is there not emphasis on caring and accepting?  why do people care who we love, what we do and how we do it?

we live in a world where the quick fix is the solution and the devastating end is the reality.  where we condition ourselves to accept tragedy with no time to deal and breathe.

i find so much beauty in my everyday activities.  but i do  have to actually be aware of slowing down and giving a moment to be thankful, otherwise i get wisked away with my deadlines and obligations.

time seems like it gets blamed for so much.  there is never enough time in the day, we always want one more day, where did the time go, if we only had more time.

we need to make time work in our favor.  that is what it is here for.  there is nothing but time and it is our job to keep ourselves aware of this and the people around us.

i write this with many different emotions and thoughts.  i have neglected writing because, well, i had no time.  hence the theme.  it is a constant as far as reminding myself to make the time.

we have so many awesome things happening for mother tongue music and we are so excited to begin sharing them with you.

we have been asked by theatremama to DJ cirque du soleil’s 25th anniversary party in nyc this month.  cirque is attempting to break the world record for number of stilt walkers up at the same time.  should be quite the event.  we will share photos and let you know how it goes!!!

i leave you today with the beautiful sounds of alkemx and his track, “time to lounge” off the magma album.

Alkemx, also known as Piero de Asmundis, started his career as a pianist and composer in Italy, working with the “South Pole Ballet”. Over the years he has worked with many prominent Italian Jazz artists. As time went by he began taking a stronger interest in sampling and sequencers and Alkemx was born.

dj.tigersprout presents…

Posted in Music We Like on May 5th, 2009 by b.

face-in-a-corner_fb

May 5th, 2009

moving to new york has been everything i had hoped it would be. this city encompasses what has to be one of the most vibrant and stimulating energies of any city on earth. of course it may not be the most natural vibe, but regardless of where it falls on the spectrum between completely natural and completely synthetic, the energy here is positively inspiring and extremely addictive.

back in 2000 when i first relocated here from san francisco, i was caught up in the search for the perfect beat — working days at a few of the top distributors in NYC pushing vinyl & CDs (the best in house, tech-hosue, electronica, leftfield & downtempo) and djing on the side. my life was very different back then, and there were only a few nights where i wasn’t out at clubs and lounges all night long!! this time around is much different. i am quite a bit older, and looking for more steady work, a much higher benefits package, and a job that i can possibly work from home. my work interests now lie in the field of travel photography and i have moved here to pursue it. of course, the music is still as much an integral part of my life as before, keeping me sane, keeping me thinking and keeping me in touch with my kind of reality. almost unbelievingly, i probably buy even more music now then i did way back then!! of course making more money really helps! thankfully, my eclectic addiction for the best in amazing soundscapes is just as fierce now as it ever was.
nearly 6 weeks back in NYC, i have revisited most of the places i used to frequent: bars, clubs, museums, restaurants, parks, famous landmarks… and i am filled with the same immense admiration for this city as i had, nearly a decade ago. surely nothing stays the same in big, ever churning cities such as this, but i was pleasantly surprised at how much was almost exactly the same — or too slightly different to notice. the streets still pulse with an intoxicating energy, and i find myself so amped that i don’t need coffee or tea and it’s easy for me to stay up til the wee hours of the morning. the dreamy hours just after midnight are my favorite — a period where most of the bulk of my creative work or brainstorming is accomplished. free from daylight distractions, the massive city falls into a background abstraction and i can slip into a quiet, thoughtful zone of reflection. accompanied by the best in electronic mood music, i float off into my own inner worlds of discovery and do the heavy lifting of what will eventual become the finished images posted on my blog.
here’s a look at 2 shots from a travel series i have recently been working on. both of these shots i took last december in southern iceland:
1. columnar basalt on the black sand beaches of vik, southern iceland
basalt-columns-in-mid-day-light
2. a golden reverie taken at jokulsarlon, iceland’s premier glacier lagoon
golden-reverie-jokulsarlon
…and here’s a look at a few gems currently in top rotation on my imac and in my shuffle:
smith & mudd — blue river: strummed acoustic guitar interwoven with crystalline electronica — beautiful, somewhat balearic, spiritually indulgent, classically arranged melody driven memories… a fusion of instrumental folk, country, starry disco & downtempo, these bright and intoxicating harmonies will have you lost in your thoughts, remembering youth, love and all things beautiful. (2009)
Smith & Mudd – Blue River – Claremont 56 Music

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

max essa — continental drift: psychedelic disco at a lovely molasses pace, laced with rock / dance guitar rifts and a surprising 80’s sensuality. a perfect listen before or after clubbing or just for around the house — don’t forget to bring out the sunglasses and lazer beams!! (2009)
Max Essa – Back To The Beach – Bear Funk Music

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

fenomenon — pacific memories — the early tapes: smooth and atmospheric jazz, funk & folk dipped into a neon coating of electronic grooves, light latin rhythms and story-time adventure themes. these wonderful, warm, instrumental and vocal reveries will have you soon believing in magic, stopping to smell the flowers and smiling for no reason at your crazy neighbors. go ahead — indulge yourself, and sing!! (2006)
Fenomenon – Out Of Control – Beatservice

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

anyways that will be all for this installment of ‘dj.tigersprout presents’ — look for me every 5 to six weeks as i will be guest blogging for Mother Tongue to share my latest photo and travel exploits as well as what is in my headphones!!
check out my photoblog for the latest in images from around the world: http://visionlogic.aminus3.com
enjoy life, seize the day and stay fierce!!!
